Apparently we got lucky our first night, only having to get up once
with Katie. Last night was much different! Katie was up at least three
time during the night, then up for good at 5:15. Needless to say,
we all took a long morning nap!
After we all caught up on sleep and had a late breakfast, we headed
outside for a walk. It was a beautiful morning; much nicer than yesterday.
Katie was happy to be outside, but suddenly disinterested in us. I
guess there are just too many new things in the world she has never
seen since she's spent the last seven months at the baby house.
In the afternoon, she wasn't feeling very good so we took an early
bath and she suddenly felt better (probably due to the fact that she
seems to be accustomed to "relieving" herself when in the
tub). She had so much fun holding on to the edges and scooting back
and forth in her own little tub. It seems like bath time will be the
highlight of this girl's day.
Tonight we had our friend Aigul over for some more fellowship and
fun. She was our first visitor since bringing Kaite home (sorry, hope
no one is jealous back home). We'll write an update letter soon and
tell you all about her work here; it really is an amazing story and
testimony!
Since we don't have much else to say today, we thought we'd post this
"top ten" list we've been working on. Enjoy!
TOP 10 THINGS WE MISS FROM AMERICA
10. Yummy Cookies (During our last experimental purchase
at the store, we ended up with bubble-gum flavored cookies.)
9. Window Screens (OK, some people have them, but
they are not standard; our bug bite covered skin can attest to that!)
8. High-speed Internet (There's nothing like being able to
upload pictures and do e-mails without paying by the minute for it.)
7. Full-size Appliances (From the fridge
to the stove, everything is miniature. What happens when they
build the first Costco?)
6. Sane Drivers (Since the street lines are only a mere suggestion,
Kazakhs play a game to see how many cars will fit in one lane)
5. Affordable Breakfast Cereal (It's amazing how cigarettes
cost as little as 30 cents/pack, but a box of corn flakes can be $7!)
4. Being able to brush you teeth with tap water (Draining
half a water bottle every time you brush teaches you to conserve.)
3. Comfortable Bed (The mattresses here are about the equivalant
of an American box-spring, & fitted sheets don't even exist.)
2. Pedestrians having the right-of-way (Both the drivers
and pedestrians play an ongoing game of chicken; remember Frogger?)
1. Clothes Dryers (since they don't exist here, clothes turn
out stiff-as-a-board and bath towels are worse than sandpaper; ouch!)
Stay tuned for our top 10 list of things we'll miss when we leave
Kazakhstan!
